Changes and Updates

September 2024
Changes to Schemes of Learning

We have made a few key changes to our schemes of learning for this academic year.

Importantly, these changes will not require any 'transition period' for students that are currently following the Bright schemes. The changes that have been made have not been across year groups.

New Year 10 Higher unit on ratio

The biggest change is the introduction of an additional unit to Year 10 higher. At the start of the summer term, there was a short unit on 'Graphs of circles' with 3 weeks to complete, which on reflection is too long and a missed opportunity to cover a little more content. I also identified that Higher students hadn't covered the topic of ratio in KS4 and would benefit from this.

So you will now see a new unit 11 on ratio which covers the higher GCSE ratio problems such as combining ratios and changing ratios. This naturally means the old units 11, 12 and 13 have been renamed to units 12, 13 and 14 respectively.

All assessments are uploaded on the site ready for you to download and view. I have also modified the end of year 10 higher exams to include some questions on ratio.

A few new objectives have been added in for this unit:

R.1.12 I can understand the link between ratios and fractions with algebra

R.1.13 I can solve problems involving changing ratios

Updates to existing documents

Additional documents that support our online schemes of learning have been updated. This includes the pdf schemes of learning, the curriculum mapping document and the diagnostic objectives. In addition, all data tracking spreadsheets have been modified to account for all of the changed covered above. These are available to download from the data tracking page.

I have also made some small changes to the end of year exams for Year 10 Higher to include some questions on ratio. The associated mark schemes and data tracking spreadsheets have also been modified.

New supporting documents - coming soon!

We have been working on some new supporting documents to accompany the schemes of learning.

We have created learning journey roadmaps for each year group. These can be found on our new supporting materials page here.

Also, after receiving a request from a Bright subscriber, we will also be producing "reduced printing" versions of our unit assessments. These will be "non-write-on" versions that will cut down on your printing costs, and students will complete the tests in their exercise books.

If you have any further questions, or require any of the previous documents that have now been removed from the site, don't hesitate to contact me here.

Changes from JaggersMaths Schemes of Learning

If you are seeing these schemes of learning for the first time, this section won't have any relevance to you adopting these schemes of learning into your school. Some schools will have been using my previously released JaggersMaths scheme of learning and would like to see what has been updated in this version.

The main thing to note is that you can transfer from the JaggersMaths schemes to Bright without having to have any years transitioning between the two. Changes that have been made have not been across year groups.

I will detail the significant changes to be aware of with some rationale here:

  1. Year 9 tiers have been renamed as support, core and extension. This was actioned from feedback I received from users of my previous schemes that schools preferred a 3 year KS3 and a 2 year GCSE course.

  2. Year 9 Autumn and Spring formal assessments have been removed. Again this is to tie in with a 3 year KS3 so Year 9 will only have an end of year formal assessment. This also frees up more time for content.

  3. Addition of Unit 4 - Money into Year 9. This was an area that I felt was lacking in the JaggersMaths schemes and covers content such as taxes and VAT, wages, utility bills, instalments and complex money problem solving. This also means there are now 13 units in Year 9 and all subsequent units have been renumbered.

  4. Additional new objectives have been added on cardinal directions G.11.1, frequency trees S.2.3/S.2.4 and comparing and ordering standard form N.15.3. These have been added to existing units throughout the schemes of learning.

  5. In Year 10 foundation, units 8 and 9 have been merged together to create one larger unit. This is to allow teachers more autonomy over the order in which they teach these objectives. As a result, all subsequent unit numbers have been altered.

If you have any further questions don't hesitate to contact me here.
